Anne on Your definition of success?

I came across the following definition of success (sent to me by http://www.rickfrishman.com):

Success

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;

To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;

To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a

redeemed social condition;

To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

This is to have succeeded.

(Often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson, it is an adaptation of a poem published in 1905 by Bessie Stanley. No version of it has been found in Emerson's writings.)

I wrote in my book Their Cancer - Your Journey about defining success in your journey with someone else's cancer, and how that definition might change. So what is your definition of success - in life or in your current situation? Share it on this thread.

I found 'The Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy Survival Guide' by Judith McKay and Nancee Hirano to be very clear and detailed.

The most recent book I've been reading is 'Getting it Off My Chest' by Janice Day. It's a really funny read, as well as a fascinating insight.

Particularly helpful to understand how breast cancer affects the whole person, or if you know someone who has taken a treatment decision you don't agree with.

Also just a jolly good read, with lots of hilarious flashbacks to a sixties childhood.

I picked up a book off my shelf yesterday, and opened it at the following poem:

Miracles

Butterflies that flit about

Laughter from a child’s mouth

Birds hanging in the breeze

Tell me, do you think of these?

Sunsets shared on the beach

The glory of a mountain peak

The magic in a flake of snow

Are these places that you go?

Lost in clouds made of cotton

Friends far away, but not forgotten

Raindrops falling on your face

Are these allowed in your space?

The pleasure in a gentle touch

Flowers and trees and stars and such

Secret places that you find

Miracles are in your mind.

Dan Coppersmith

I often say that it's important for family members not to abandon their hobbies and interests when supporting someone with cancer. Here's a quote that agrees with me!

'Every one of us should have our pet interests - as many as we can handle efficiently and happily. Our interests should never be allowed to lag or get cold so that all enthusiasm is spent. Each day can be one of triumph if you keep up to your interests - feeding them as they feed you' - George Matthew Adams.
