It is essentially a flexible tube leading from the uterus to the outside of the body through an opening in the vulva. The cervix or neck of the womb is found at the top of the vagina.

Vaginal cancer is where there is a tumour or growth in a woman’s vagina. It is a rare cancer. Most vaginal cancer is a form of skin cancer which forms on the lining of the vagina. The most common symptom is unexpected bleeding from the vagina, particularly after sexual intercourse.

A virus is a microscopic organism which invades the cells of the body, causing an infection. The immune system will usually fight the virus effectively, unless it is not functioning well (for instance after chemotherapy). Some viruses are thought to lead to an increased risk of cancer developing – for instance the human papilloma virus (HPV) can give an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
