Treatment Program

A cancer treatment program is an agreed sequence of medical treatments which have been suggested after a cancer diagnosis. Treatment programs will differ from one patient to another depending on the exact details of the cancer and other health considerations. A treatment program could include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. There may also be palliative care which seeks to lessen the impact of symptoms of the cancer or the treatments. The suggested treatment program should be explained to the patient and opportunity given to ask questions or get further explanations before the treatment program is finalised.

Tamoxifen

Tamoxifen is a medicine which suppresses the production of the hormone oestrogen (one of the female hormones). Tamoxifen is one drug which may be given to women who have had breast cancer, if their cancer has shown in tests to respond to oestrogen. This lessens the chance of the cancer coming back.

Testicular cancer is a growth or tumour on a man’s testicle. It is more common when the testicle has not descended out of the body in childhood. The usual first symptom is swelling of the testicle, which can be felt through the scrotum with self-examination.

A tumour is a growth of cells that is not normal in the body. Our bodies are made up of different types of cells which each have a job to do. In a tumour, the cells will not be doing that job. They will create more cells (like themselves) than should be there in that area of the body. Tumours can be either benign or cancerous.
